See This Expert's Profile: admin

I am thinking about what we want to be when we get out in the real world. I am really interested in being a wedding planner/ having my own wedding catering business. But i have a question, what classes do i have to take and where? At a college?

You will want to start working for a caterer as soon as you can. Real world experience goes a long way in the Culinary Arts Business. If you are wanting to do catering, I would suggest The Art Institute of Atlanta and getting a degree in the Culinary Arts with a focus on Pastry and Baking. Le Cordon Blue is a good school but the AIA tends to kick their butts in competition.
My husband is a chef that does catering and he has a degree from them. He has done weddings, fashion shows, concert parties, hospital events and book releases. He doesn’t have the focus in Pastry but I pull up the end there for him when he needs it. His focus is in Classic Culinary Art and Fine Dining.
You will also want some classes in business, event planning and catering. Perhaps a class in Restaurant management as well to round things out. The degree takes 2-4 years to complete, depending on what all you go for.
You can also become a non-degree CC (Certified Chef) if you become an apprentice to another CC that has their qualifications in teaching CC’s. Many CC’s do. My husband does with his degree.
Edit:
Culinary Schools in Alabama –
Trenholm State Technical College Montgomery Alabama
Virginia College in Birmingham Birmingham Alabama
Faulkner State Community College Gulf Shores Alabama

Sweetie as a caterer you will need a culinary school to learn the fine points of cooking and presentation of food. Look into the American culinary schools. You can begin to teach yourself cake decorating. Get a Wilton World of Cakes catalog and order equipment a little at the time,(ask for it for gifts) I did and taught myself. You can use just a cake pan or 2 to practice and reuse the icing over and over till you get accomplished at a border or concept.(started in my teens) Begin to learn how to gourmet cook and the techniques needed. Collect recipes and prepare them for friends and family (make your sisters/brothers/ or other friends or family b’day cake for instance). Find and collect books/tools on advanced garnishing techniques( you can make roses of tomato skins to decorate veggie trays for instance or daffodils of carrots and raw turnip slices) or swans from Choux pastry

In this particular field, you may want to go to a University and major in Hotel Restaurant Management. You will learn evey aspect of the culinary arts field, including table seating/settings, time management and crowd control. As well as food presentations and how to cook for what occasions. I know you want to stay in Alabama, but the University of Maryland Eastern Shore has a excellent competitive HRM program.
